Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1929. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. First edition. Slight crease on the spine else fine in a nice, very good plus, spine-faded dustwrapper with some rubbing at the extremities. The author's first book, basis for the George Hill film *Min and Bill*, with a screenplay by Frances Marion and Marion Jackson and featuring Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery in their first foray as an unlikely romantic duo. Dressler won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Min over fellow nominees Irene Dunne, Marlene Dietrich, Norma Shearer, and Ann Harding. The Dressler-Beery partnership proved so appealing that they were reunited three years later in both *Tugboat Annie* and *Dinner at Eight*. Indianapolis / New York: Bobbs-Merrill, 1940. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Endpapers negligibly foxed, still easily fine in a bright and attractive, near fine dustwrapper with a moderate-sized accordion tear (which has been flattened) on the rear panel. A fascinating and exceptionally uncommon non-fiction account of con-men, and the definitive work on the subject. It was the primary reference used by David S. Ward for his original screenplay for the film *The Sting*. Maurer managed to effect a settlement with the studio when he showed that a single line from the book was identical to one of the stage directions. An important antecedent to one of the best films of the past few decades. The 1973 George Roy Hill-directed film featuring Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Robert Shaw won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Scarce in jacket.
