The Grandparents Were Friends With Ellis Credle And We Have A Letter Of Hers Referring To The Enclosure Of Thi Slip For Them. Ellis Credle (1902-1998) Was An American Author Of A Number Of Books For Children And Young Adults, Some Of Which She Also Illustrated. Credle (Which Is Pronounced "Cradle") Is Best Known As The Creator Of The Acclaimed Children's Book Down Down The Mountain (1934) And Other Stories Set In The South. While Looking For A Publisher For Her Stories, Credle Was Put To Work Under The W.P.A. She Drew Reptiles For The American Museum Of Natural History And Painted A Series Of Murals For The Brooklyn Children's Museum. The Most Successful Of Her Work Has Been Called Inspirational, But Some Other Stories Were Controversial For Her Depiction Of African Americans.
