Complete in four volumes with a supplemental volume bound in 9 divisions. Approx 9 3/4'' tall in original brown cloth over board with gilt titles & thistle design on spine, blind embossing on front covers with gilt emblems of the universities as the centre design. 80 engraved portraits & 5 engraved views of the principal seats of learning (the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Aberdeen) in Scotland. 579 + 604 + 575 + 668pp. Comprehensive biographies of Scotsmen (& occasional woman) from St Patrick in AD 372 to the early/mid 1800's & also a chronological index. There is wear to the spines & corners bumped. Some foxing on plates, but generally quite clean inside. Ex reference library with presentation bookplate to front with letter from the presenter dated 1912 attached inside. Library bookplate to rear pastedown. One stamp to front pastedown & upper edge & mark where a sticker has been removed (Vol 1), handwritten library number on reverse of title page, the occasional blind stamp within (see pictures).
