Limited edition of 500 copies, this being No. 381. Fine hardback in fine slipcase. The Zoological Society of London holds 43 volumes of highly detailed illustrations by British army officer, Major Henry Jones (1838-1921). They contain some 1,200 watercolours of birds. To mark the 150th anniversary of the Societys foundation, 24 of these drawings were beautifully reproduced in this volume. Each plate is accompanied by text prepared by Bruce Campbell. Among the birds depicted are ptarmigans, pheasants, bustards, turacos, kingfishers, orioles, and jays.

Gilt lettering to spine. Gilt borders, front and rear. Teg. Bound by Hunter and Foulis of Edinburgh. Contained in a brown slipcase with large silver heraldic coat of arms to one side. 15.5ins x 18.5ins, marbled endpapers, unpaginated but xi, (i), followed by 24 full page colour illustrations, each preceded by the title and faced by a page of text.Nearly all the illustrations depict two birds (male and female). Foreword by The Duke of Edinburgh. Preface by Lord Zuckerman. Introduction by Bruce Campbell. Printed by Percy Lund Humphries at the Country Press on Hollingworth all rag cartridge from The Original Turkey Mill, Kent. Minor rubbing to top & bottom of spine, else VG+ in a G+ (slightly edgeworn) slipcase. NB heavy book, over 4kg pre-packing. Expensive to post overseas.
