Written in diary form, this is the story of a ten-year-old girl who moves with her family in 1855 from a town on the Maine coast where her father is to be the lighthouse keeper. One night when he is ill it is up to her to keep the light shining and the ships safe. Illustrated in pen and ink and watercolor by Kimberly Bulcken Root. SIGNED by Hopkinson on the title page. Historical note at the end in which the author explains that while Birdie is a fictional character, her story is based on the experiences of real life lighthouse heroines. Tall thin format. Unpaginated.
