About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1894. First Edition. Full Moroco. Near Fine. With nine original watercolors applied directly to page by artist Catherine Westinghouse. 8vo. 18 by 4.75 cm. viii, 351 pp. With 24 plates of black and white photographs, in addition to the original artwork. While it was not unknown for Victorian hobbyists to draw directly into a book, it was still uncommon, and especially at the level demonstrated herein, with the watercolors looking as if they were part of the original design of the book! The text of the book is a birdwatchers' appreciation, and the author seeks to impart the pleasure and reward of the activity while casually sharing much interesting information about birds. Decorative blue morocco binding by Blackwell.
