About This Item

University Press of Kentucky, 2002. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Fine, fresh, unread copy. First printing. Hardcover. 283 pp. with index, bibliography. Born of humble origins in the mountains of North Carolina in 1885, by the 1920s John R. Brinkley was a national phenomenon. Thogh he had only questionable medical certification, he set out to become a pioneer in the field of organ transplanys----specifically the transplanting of goat gonads into sexually impotent, aging men. This virility "cure" took the nation by storm and aptients flocked to his Milford, Kansas hospital. Brinkley founded one of the country's first commercial radio stations, using his show "Medical Question Box" to promote the gonad procedure as well as other procedures. After Kansas revoked both is medical and radio licences, he ran as a write-in candidate for Governor (unsuccessfully) and eventually moved to Texas and began operating a "border blaster" radio stationof a million watts just on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande.
