About This Item

[Florida]: Norman Studios, 1928. 1st Edition. No binding. Good. & TATUM, Lee B., (1861-1933). QUITE SCARCE LARGE EARLY AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY EPHEMERA POSTER

First edition. Norman Studios bright graphics film large stone litho poster for the movie called "Black Gold" with an all coloured cast. Nice stone litho promotional theatre and promotional poster of 3 sheet poster printed in three sections, flat not folded. Multi colours one size (yellow, red, green & black) and verso blank. Printed by the Richey Litho Co. Final full size approximately 41 x 81 inches flat once assembled with the three sheets rolled poster sections. Quite scarce to rare.

Condition: Given the number of folds in each of the three poster sections, some fold tears in each, with wear to fold lines with some edge wear and some archival tape reinforcement to a few fold lines on reverse. These are fairly typical of old vintage poster sheets, even unused copies like this. All three folded poster sections otherwise are in good condition. The 3 poster rolled sections will have to be assembled and ideally backed to be fully displayed.

Norman wrote of the film's hero: "Through superhuman effort, and without sleep for 48 hours, he fights a band of crooks... only to discover it is a dry hole. [He] winds up in jail. All this makes for an absorbing story of action and thrills with a great surprise at the end when everything is cleared up."

After 1920 Norman established himself and his company in Jacksonville, Florida, and began producing all black films. He made several of these "race" films in the 1920's and distributed them through the 1930's.

Unfortunately, Black Gold would be Norman's last feature film. The advent of sound, as well as the increasing centralization of filmmaking in Hollywood, led to the studio ceasing production.
