About This Item
Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1947. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. First US edition. Hardback, bound in the original red cloth with printed titling and design to spine and upper board. 20.5 × 14cm, 324pp. Not signed but this copy comes from the Munger Africana Library and is blindstamped to the title page. Edwin Munger was a world-recognized authority on Africa and amassed a library of over 45,000 volumes on Sub-Saharan Africa. First published in 1937, "Black Hamlet" is a chronicle of physician Wulf Sachs' experiences psychoanalysing a man from a Johannesburg slum for two-and-a-half years. Originally an attempt to learn whether psychoanalysis was applicable across different cultures, Sachs' findings became so much more. "Black Hamlet" is a narrative reconstruction of one black South African's life as two worlds collide. Critically acclaimed when first published, this fascinating book will appeal to those with an interest in psychology and psychoanalysis. Condition: The spine is faded with fraying at the spine ends but this remains in strong readable condition, and with an interesting provenance.
