"Roger Mais was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1905. His mother was a teacher, and he was educated privately until he was fourteen, when he went to Calabar High School. On leaving school with a Senior Certificate, he took a job first in the Civil Service but soon searched for employment better suited to his Bohemian temperament. He was at one time or another a banana tallyman, an insurance salesman, a horticulturalist, a photographer, a journalist on the Daily Gleaner and a staff worker on Public Opinion.
