About This Item

In good condition - ex library - has markings from use - due to differing weights on books, postage maybe adjusted at checkout.

The artist Harriet Burden, embittered by the lack of attention paid her by the New York art world, conducts an experiment: she hides her identity behind three male fronts in a series of solo exhibitions. Yet when she unmasks herself, not everyone believes her.

In a collection of texts compiled posthumously, Burden's story emerges from a range of sources including her own notebooks and the testimonies of her children, her lover and a dear friend. Each account is different, however, and the mysteries multiply. But one thing is clear: Burden's involvement with the last of her masks turned into a dangerous psychological game that ended with the man's bizarre death.
