About This Item

Henry Witmer. Good with no dust jacket. 1823. Second Edition. Hardcover. Heavy wear on marbled paper boards with leather on spine. If there was corner leather it was rubbed away along with the spine ends. Rubbing on edges with hand-written spine title barely legible. Heavy foxing, old dampstains, and dog-earring of endpapers and text pages. Name of Joseph Worrel, dated 1837, on first free endpaper. First edition was published in 1796, with this edition by a publisher in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania scarce. William Cobbett was a British pamphleteer who emigrated to America in the 1790s and criticized its version of democracy. He had spent time in France in 1792 and here relates the atrocities of the French Revolution as a warning to the Americans on nationalist sovereignty. For legal reasons he moved back to England in 1800 where he continued publishing controversial political arguments, resulting in imprisonment for libel. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall; 116 pp .
