About This Item
Image of actual book: Used book has little to no marking, writing from the previous owner. No DJ. Slight bumping, rubbing, little tears on the top, spine, edges, corners. Outer edges have yellowing. browning. stains, foxing. Top stain of red on top outer edges. An island where old Anton, deprived of his beer garden -- now dominated by the Nazi village officials, makes a slim livelihood of raising radishes and manages to escape any sort of jurisdiction due to the fact that his island disappears under flood tide for part of each year. Add to this constant irritant the fact that Anton dares to scoff at the Nazis dares to tell the truth. 1945. A3.
Reviews
On Dec 22 2020, a reader said:
A poignant story set during WWII in a small German town. Old Anton tries to live his life as best he can while avoiding clashing with the Nazis who run the town, but a clash becomes inevitable. There is humor, kindness and tragedy, but most of all the story serves as an interesting comment on human nature. Like all Bemelmans books, it is a window into a lost world. I highly recommend it to Bemelmans fans and those who are interested in Germany or WWII.
