Beloved YA novel about young Janey Larkin, daughter of itinerant farm workers, her blue willow plate, & her search for a real "home" in post-Depression-era America. Named a Newberry Honor book, it is often referred to as the "juvenile "Grapes of Wrath." Orig. published in Oct.1940, this is the Fourth Printing of that FIRST EDITION from Aug. 1943. Hardcover book with deep blue cloth-covered boards, an embossed tree design to front cover, & gilt lettering to spine, in 172 pages with endpapers & internal pen-and-ink illustrations, including 10 full-page ones, by Paul Lantz. Condition is VG: very clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Pages creamy white with a whisper of age-appropriate tanning to outer edges. Former owner's name & old price crossed out on ffep; NO other writing, underlining, or highlighting; not ex-lib.Only other flaw is rubbing to extremities & significant bumping & fading to all corners, with no cloth loss. The unclipped DJ (with orig. $2.00 price intact) is only Good: generally bright & clean, but with moderate-heavy rubbing to all extremities & paper loss at both ends of spine & all corners. Also, someone colored in the girl's mouth in pen on front cover. Nicely protected in new mylar cover Free! A decent copy of this classic, attractively priced.
