SIGNED and generically INSCRIBED by Barnard on the front free endpaper in the year of publication: "30 Sept 1981 With my best wishes Chris Barnard." Illman has signed the title page, and inscribed it thusly: "To prof all best wishes John." Laid-in is a printed photograph, which appears to depict Barnard performing a surgery in an operating room. On the verso of that image, an inscription reads: "Thank you Ester Geoffrey & Jonathan Cope." We are unsure of the provenance of this copy. Regardless, a nice signed example of this broad-based look at human medicine, edited by the South African cardiac surgeon who performed the first successful human-to-human heart transplant.
