Nel suo romanzo del 1851 Scenes de la Vie de Boheme, l'autore francese Henri Murger creò l'immagine dell'artista come un outsider che, in piena epoca borghese, viveva nella povertà romantica. Proprio nel mezzo del periodo in cui la leggenda della Boheme crebbe, arrivò l'invenzione della fotografia. Quanto fosse forte questo approccio colorato alla vita tra gli autori, i pittori e perfino i fotografi stessi è riflesso dalle mises en scene fotografiche, presentati nella mostra al Museum Ludwig e nel relativo catalogo.
