About This Item

London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK), 1937. 1st ed.. Hardback thick octavo, dustjacket, good condition (in good dustjacket), navy colour top edge, endpaper maps, black & white photos, frontispiece, foxing edges, light foxing & toning endpapers, light foxing some pages (mostly top edge), flap price-clipped dustjacket (rear cover split at join to spine, slight loss spine ends & corners, spine little rubbed, top edge rear cover little thinned), shop label inside front cover, protected by removable semi-archival plastic sleeve. 280 pp. A short account by W. Ashley-Brown of Christianity in Western India. The book deals principally with the English period and the development of the Church of England (now the Church of India, Burma and Ceylon) from its beginnings as a Chaplaincy of the original East India Company at Surat, trading under the charter of Queen Elizabeth I. The reason for the book is the approaching centenary of the Diocese of Bombay (now Mumbai). The first Bishop, Dr Thomas Carr, who had been one of the Company's Chaplains and also Archdeacon of Bombay, was consecrated on Sunday, November 19, 1837, in Lambeth Palace Chapel.
