Many of the rhymes take the form of cautionary tales for parents and children. This Victorian illustrated volume is a classic. Contents complete and unmarked, except for two initial drawings with hand shaded backgrounds. At some point in the history of this book, the original spine has been replaced with black cloth tape; boards rubbed at edges; front endpaper lacking; tape removed from hinges of two early leaves; a couple short marginal tears with old repairs. A later printing of a great Victorian book with b&w illustrated plates worthy of matting and framing. .

Oblong hardcover in olive green paper covered boards with illustrated panel lettered in red and decorated with drawing of a fiddling cat and a group of kittens. 44 pp. rectos each with a humorous line drawing by the author and humorous captions, short verse pieces , etc. Very good, wear to the head and foot of spine and some rubbing along the gutter hinges. Internally clean. In addition of cats, herein we find donkeys, owls, horses, a bald eagle, elehpants, lions and even a dodo.

Francis, including a large amount of cat antics and some lampooning of Kate Greenaway. 6.5'' x 8.75''. Original pictorial green boards. Illustrated in black and white. 46 pages, printed one side only. Gift inscription to front flyleaf, dated 1921. Several pencil marks throughout, binding with a bit of naive hand-coloring. Boards with light edgewear, mild bumping to corners and spine ends with careful edge infils; a bit of rubbing. Leaves with scattered faint soil. Firm.

Oblong, 17 by 23.5 cm. ix, [1], 37 pages or leaves -- printing only on rectos of the narratives, or of the numerically paginated pages. A touch of Wain, perhaps, but here a host of other anthropomorphic animals -- owls, donkeys, bunnies, giraffes, even dogs! The drawings bear some resemblance to the nascent comic books enjoying their first mass circulation in the funny pages of newspapers of the day, with stories told over several "cells" often, these spread over the like number of pages. Also preserved is the dust jacket, one of the earliest with a pictorial image on its front and back, not to mention its spine, and the title and author's name on the front and spine. The book itself is generally clean and tight, with a few small and minor stains, none disconcerting. Endpapers have offsetting from the DJ.
