In September of 1922, the organizers of the Hastings chess congress decided to hold a masters tournament which would pit two English masters against four of the best from the European continent. The participants of the double round robin were Alexander Alekhine, Efim Bogoljubov, Akiba Rubinstein, Siegbert Tarrasch, George Alan Thomas, and Frederick Yates. Alekhine managed to edge out superstar Rubinstein by half a point in the final, winning his most famous game ever against long time rival Bogoljubov, whereas Rubinstein struggled for over a hundred moves against Thomas only to come up short at the end. The 30 games are fully annotated by Alekhine, with some notes from The Field column added. A distant third and fourth was a tie, Bogoljubow and Thomas with 4 1/2 points. Fifth was the aging Tarrasch with 4 and Yates sixth with 2 1/2.

Condition:

Front inner hinge cracked, corners bumped, spine ends rubbed, some light internal soiling else a very good copy.

The tournament consisted of ten contestants. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grünfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Sämisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner. He soon took up residence in Antwerp.
Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, some internal notations, spine heal rubbed through else a very good copy issued without jacket. .

Aron Nimzowitsch captured first prize, playing at that time, the hyper-modern openings. He did not lose a game with a score of 8. Tied for second were Friedrich (Fritz) Samisch and Savielly Tartakower with scores of 6. Rudolf Spielmann took 4th with 5 1/2. Ernst Jacobson was 5th with 3 points and Jorgen Muller was 6th with 1 1/2. With the Nimzowitsch win, this gave the hyper-modern school more respect.Condition:Spine ends and corners chipped, edges and spine sunned else a good copy, internally very good.

The Danish Chess Championship was organized by the Danish Chess Union (DSU) and first held in 1910. A masterclass was first introduced in 1915. But it is only from 1922 that the title of Danish chess champion was introduced, this was the first year also players from Copenhagen joined. The Master Class for 1916 was contested by 8 players. It was won b P F Johner with a score of 5 and tied two through 4 by M Marchand, O. von Lowenborg and H Krause. 5th place was claimed by O Sevensson with 3 points. 6th place was a tie between Johs Giersing and G Nyholm. The last place was regulated to E Jacobson with 1 1/2.

19 unpaginated tournament bulletins (approximately 55 pages) with tables. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2) bound in individual bulletin wrappers. First edition.The first Argentine Chess Championship was held in 1921. The Champion's title was granted after victorious or drawn match between previous champion and challenger, a winner of Torneo Mayor. The matches were done away in 1950 year, except for 1952. From 1953 the tournament was changed to an all-round invitation, although in many cases it was played with the Swiss system.
The 33rd championship was played in 1955 with Miguel Najdorf the victor in a twenty player contested event. Hector Rossetto was a clear second with a score of 14.5 one and half points behind the leader, followed by Erich Eliskases at 13.5.Condition:Edge wear, occasional notes, punch hole to hinges, hand drawn cross table indicating game pages else a very good copy.

Philip Klett was renowned for composing extremely hard to solve problems, often with hidden zugzwang and many variations. He composed direct mates. In 1878 he published P. Klett Schachprobleme. Mit einer Einfuhrung in die Theorie des Schachproblems including 112 problems. In it he described chess problems as " mathematical poetry ". The book was reissued 100 years later by John D. Beasley as "A Selection of Chess Problems by Philip Klett, with a solving commentary" (British Chess Magazine, 1978). Klett is considered one of the most important composers of the old German school of chess composition.

Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. 17 unpaginated daily bulletins, each 8 to 10 pages. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") issued in wrappers. First edition.Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, including their international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played.[1] The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. The 1957 contest was held at the Hotel Provincial in Mar del Plata. and is part of an iconic beachfront complex, built in 1946 by the celebrated architect Alejandro Bustillo. 17 unpaginated Daily Bulletins with tables. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/4") 17 daily bulletins bound in stapled wrappers. First edition.There were a number of strong Argentinean tournaments in the 50's played at Mar del Plata. The first one in 1950 with others in 1953, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959.
In this tournament Miguel Najdorf and Julio Bolbochan tied for first with scores of 12 1/2. E Eliskases and R Sanguinetti shared third and fourth with 11 each. Jacobo Bolbochan captured a lone fifth with 10 points. There were a total of 17 contestants in this tournament.Condition:Light edge wear with some age toning to edges else a very good to fine copy.

Edited by Bernhard Kagan.(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5392) First edition.The tournament consisted of ten contestants. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grunfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Samisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner. He soon took up residence in Antwerp.Condition:Corners bumped and rubbed, some internal notations, spine heal rubbed through else a very good copy issued without jacket.
