Willis P. Hazard, 1863. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. First U.S. edition, Willis P. Hazard, 1863 (published simultaneously with Doolady). Rebound in hardcover with handwritten label on spine. Binding is strong, just slightly shaken. Nearly every page is moderately stained or smudged. A few pages have faint pencil marks. Portion of original front cover missing, about 2"x2", but not affecting title or Lear's name. Original rear cover, with limerick 113 ("Young Lady of Clare"), is missing. Page edges have some staining and soiling. Exterior lightly shelfworn, mostly at corners. Reliable customer service. Photos available. We ship daily. Expedited shipping available!

Synopsis

Edward Lear (1812 - 1888) was an English writer of nonsense, the most famous piece of which is The Owl and the Pussycat. He is also credited with popularizing the limerick, though there was some speculation as to whether his patron, the Earl of Derby, simply used Lear as a pseudonym for his own writings. Lear was also a successful illustrator and even spent some time tutoring Queen Victoria in drawing before his improper behaviour had him thrown out of court.
