About This Item

London: J. M. Dent and Co.,, 1896. First Macdougall edition, the illustrator's second book. Macdougall, who collaborated with Aubrey Beardsley, was a member of the New English Art Club with his wife, the translator and writer Margaret Armour. His illustrations, primarily completed between 1896 and 1898, are excellent examples of arts and crafts style, with strong art nouveau influences. He contributed both to The Yellow Book and Savoy magazine. Octavo. Original beige buckram over bevelled boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, front cover with floral design blocked in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, red silk bookmark. Illustrated title page in red and black, 8 double-page illustrations, decorative borders to text throughout. Neat contemporary Christmas gift inscription on front free endpaper. Rear board a little soiled, a few bumps to board edges, endpapers browned, a little toning to page edges, remnants of detatched bookmark to rear free endpaper. A very good copy indeed, internally fresh.
