About This Item

P. Cockram, London, first edition, 1899. Cloth, top edge gilt, gilt cover-title within small gilt border, small 4to, 22 cm,. xvii, 341, [1] pp. 3939 entries. A volume with a wealth of information on the books sold at auction in the period covered and the trade more generally. The general introduction surveys the state of the market and current trends and provides comparative tables showing prices in each of the years 1895 to 1898 for works by Robert Louis Stevenson, by Rudyard Kipling, and for publications of the Kelmscott Press. The main catalogue covers some 73 auction sales from July 1897 to May 1898, providing the totals realized and often a few lines of introduction about each, and catalogue descri[ptions, prices and buyers for selected lots of interest from each sale - nearly 4,000 in total. The catalogue descriptions often reproduce the full information available from the auction catalogue, and sometimes with additional comment. Well-indexed. A little rubbed, duststaining to untrimmed edges, contents slightly agetoned, otherwise Good.
