About This Item

Tokyo [1939], Kenkyusha. Buff boards, very good, 117p., with an introduction and notes by Hiroshi Muraoka, small spot to upper right corner, else clean, solid, 12.5 x 18.5 cm. This classic Zen work covers the gentle martial art of tea ceremony. . An esthetical work uncovers the schools of tea, Taoism & "Zen-ism," ennobled drinking of tea, the tea room, the flowers which decorate the tea room, and the masters of tea. . Okakura was the curator of the Dept. of Chinese & Japanese art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts from 1906-13. The Book of Tea was started as an esoteric offering for the small aesthetic world of Boston but eventually was translated into numerous languages & sold in the hundreds of thousands. . The American edition is the true first edition. Both Okakura & Ernest Fenollosa were instrumental in preventing the destruction of Japanese traditional culture and art during the wave of foreignism that swept Japan in the late 19th century. . Out of this movement came the National Museum and the National School of Art which Okakura headed in the 1890's. . A great work, for all students of Japanese aesthetics. *** .

Synopsis

Zen and the art of tea-the classic book about the Japanese tea ceremony that is as much a guide to life. Ritualized, romantic, and historically rich, the tea ceremony is the creation of something beautiful out of the everyday. Originally written in English more than a hundred years ago to be read aloud at Isabella Stewart Gardner's famous salon, The Book of Tea presents the meeting of East and West in a teacup. It explores Asian culture through the history and aestheticism-or "teaism"-of the tea ceremony and also suggests a deep connection between beauty and war, and between flowers and social mores. In its formality, attention to detail, and celebration of beauty and harmony, the tea ceremony encapsulates the Japanese view of life-in fact, the art of life.
