About This Item

New York: Random House, 1940. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo. 360 pp. Sharp First Edition, Stated First Printing. Quarter-bound in cream cloth over navy blue cloth, with gilt and red lettering and decoration on the spine. With an informal index by Christopher Morley. Charles Vincent Emerson Starrett (1886-1974) was a book collector, author, bibliographer, and a Sherlock Holmes scholar. Starrett lived in Chicago, writing first for the Chicago Daily News, and later as a regular columnist for the Chicago Tribune. His Chicago Tribune column, Books Alive, was an influential literary column for 25 years. Square, tight and clean throughout with a touch of softness to the spine ends and minor bumping to the top tips. Very attractive unclipped dust-jacket, ($3.00), has some small chips at the crown and a few tiny nicks at the tips. Edge-wear and mild toning to edges and spine panel. Still bright and clean with notears or creases. Inscribed by the author on the ffep, "All the best to _____ _____, Vincent Starrett". A very pretty copy.
