About This Item

Andre Deutsch Ltd, London, first edition, 1980. Cloth, 8vo,. 175 pp. From long experience [Professor Brook] suggests possible fields for the collector - illustrated books, manuscripts, private press editions, reprints, books for children and Victorian novels - and shows that these do not have to be expensive collectors' items. He covers the trends in the collectors' market and the practical aspects of caring for one's collection, and he describes some of the personalities involved in this infectious pursuit - well-known collectors, booksellers and forgers, especially Thomas James Wise. As an extra aid to the beginner he includes technical information on book production, and gives explanations of useful bibliographical terms. Finally Professor Brook, from personal experience, advises on ways of disposing of a collection. His own fine collections of drama, publishing history and books printed before 1800 are now in the John Rylands Library of the University of Manchester, where he is an Emeritus Professor. This book is an ideal companion for anyone interested in the world of books; from occasional readers to addicted collectors. It combines excellent personal advice with a thorough and thoughtful approach." - from the blurb. Lacks title-page, otherwise Good in good dustwrapper.
