A "--medley, in which the grandiloquence of open-air speech is set beside the easy familiarities of the chimney corner." So described by the author in the Preface. Hardcover Book, 1884 First Edition, in surprisingly Good Condition. Brown cloth binding with gilt outlined panel on spine and front with gilt titles within, gilt still bright and sharp. Top edge gilt. Generally clean, with pale discolored area on front, front corners gently bumped, corners and spines ends worn, edges rubbed. Sewn binding is tight and sound. Rough cut. Bookplate on paste-down of the well-known collector, Frederick W. Skiff (1867-1947), was an author, noted collector, and bibliophile. Internals are completely clean, no underlining, no highlighting. Contents include an Address at the Tarrytown Centennial Celebration, April 3, 1883, for Washington Irving--his centennial year; Titian and His Times-a speech Read before the Art-School, Yale College; Writings on the Procession of the Months; Beginnings of an Old Town-Norwich, 1659-1859 and Centennial Address; Two College Talks; In-Doors and Out-of-Doors-A Quatrain: Fires and Firesides, Highways and Parks, House Interiors, Homes and Holidays. 291 pages. 5.25 x 7.5 inches. Charles Scribners Sons, NY, 1884.
