About This Item

Rutland, Vermont: Charles E. Tuttle Company, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. Rust colored cloth, embossed with title in gilt. Near fine, in good dust wrapper. 349 pages. 26.5 x 19 cm. This lush cookbook brings together the ethnological background of the Luso-Afro-Indian populations through the lens of food. Traditional Brazilian recipes found the meals and flours native to the environment from the Indian population. The Portuguese contributed their codfish and the African slaves brought the dendê oil, condiments, spices and coconut milk. This book is filled with recipes including many featuring beans and rice, coconut, meats, patties, fish, soups, salads, and desserts. Beautifully illustrated by Carybé, better known for his woodcuts in Gabriel García Márquez's books. Interior and boards crisp and clean. Dust wrapper rubbed and chipped. Former owner's book plate pasted in. Covered in protective mylar.
