About This Item
New York: Random House, 1954. 235pp. 8vo. Publisher's cloth. Ownership inscription of front endpaper. Very good in a good or better dustwrapper.
First edition (first printing). Contemporary study of the initial efforts to integrate Black Americans into the United States' Armed Forces. After the Second World War, President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981 abolishing discrimination in the military on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin. Much of the enforcement of the new integration policies began under President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the early 1950s, at the time of the Korean War. Author and journalist Lee Nichols includes much historical background and includes a chapter on "The Woman Problem."
