About This Item

Warner Books. New York. Fine First Edition, later printing quarter-bound in green with tan boards and silver lettering to spine; fine in fine unclipped ($14.95) jacket now protected with removable mylar cover. Signed by author on the half title page.

Robert Waller (1939-2017) was a faculty member at the Univ. of Northern Iowa, serving as dean of the business school (1980-1986). In 1989, dissatisfied with his career he took an unpaid leave of absence to explore the state of Iowa. Photographing the covered bridges found in Madison Co. (Iowa) Waller was the inspired to write the novella in 2 weeks. In the story Robert Kincaid, a photographer encounters the middle-aged farm wife Francesca. After an intense four-day affair Francesca must make a choice; remain with her family or begin a new life.

The book was an immediate best-seller in 1992, staying on the NY TImes best-seller list for three years. The book was the basis for the movie by the same name in 1995 and starred Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. Added bonus is a note describing the conversation with the author describing how the bridges are haunted. The back side (not shown) illustrates Mr. Waller's humor. 171 pg.

Synopsis

The Bridges of Madison County is a 1992 best-selling novel by Robert James Waller which tells the story of a married but lonely Italian woman, living in 1960s Madison County, Iowa, who engages in an affair with a National Geographic photographer from Bellingham, Washington who is visiting Madison County in order to create a photographic essay on the covered bridges in the area. The novel is presented as a novelization of a true story, but it is in fact entirely fiction.
