About This Item

Pittsburg: Published by the Author, 1864. HB. Quarter brown leather and brown marbled boards, gilt lettering on spine, 8vo, 382 pp. O'Donovan was the author of a poetic history of Ireland, and came to America to sell copies to fellow Irish emmigrants in the period after the Great Famine. He used Pittsburg as a base, traveling west to Cincinnati, Galena and Nauvoo, Illinois, and then St. Louis. He later traveled to Philadelphia, New York, and Massachusetts. From his contacts with the Irish in America, he wrote this book. This work is especially important because O'Donovan listed names and often addresses and occupations of the people he interviewed, giving insights into mid-nineteenth century Irish diaspora. This copy is an x-college library, with usual library markings. Some foxing, especially to end papers. Covers show edge wear and scuffing. Book condition Good+.
