The Native American writer, lecturer, interpreter and artist of the Omaha tribe in Nebraska was of complex ancestry --- Ponca, Iowa, French and Anglo-American. Daughter of the last head chief of the Omahas, educated in eastern schools, wife of journalist Thomas Tibbles, Susette La Flesche gave up teaching to campaign for justice on behalf of the Poncas when warring broke out on the reservation. She testified before Senate committees, was feted at the White House, and later lectured in England, and fought for Indian citizenship. A courageous activist, Susette La Flesch was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame in 1983, ten years after publication of this well researched biography..
