About This Item
Charles Scribners' Sons, New York: 1890., 1890 pp. 316 + Plus color map frontis of Florida, color map of Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign, engraved portrait of Stonewall Jackson, Recumbent statue of General Lee. Illustrated with two maps of Civil War battlefield campaigns. Slightly browned. Penciled ownership of Bertie McKee. Top edge gold gilt. 8vo. Original full purple cloth binding, slightly worn. Henry Martyn Field (1822-1907) was one of a quartet of distinguished brothers. An author and clergyman he wrote extensively about his world travels. He went to Florida for his health and here, records his impressions of the state. It is an especially valuable account of the Civil War and race relations at the time. Here he makes the claim that segregation was part of human instinct which could not be overcome through legislation. Hi greatest early celebrity came from his marriage in the 1850s to Mlle. Henrietta Deluzy-Desportes, the one-time governess to the ill-fated Charles de Choiseul-Praslin, Duc de Praslin whose murder of his wife Fanny (daughter of Marshal Horace Sebastiani) and apparent suicide help set off the events leading to the overthrow of King Louis Philippe's reign in 1848.
