About This Item

Brisbane: Boolarong Publications, 1988. xv + 268 pp, b&w illustrations, bibliographies. Or boards in jacket. Prev owner name on front free endpaper, endpapers toned. From the blurb, 'The author's historical narration covers the period 1824-1854, which saw the rise of the first major urban centre in north-east Australia. The book straddles the period of penal establishment and free settlement and relates the influence of those periods on the emerging city. The penal era to 1842 reveals the origins and reasons for the settlement, and the effect of the convict years on its growth, its buildings and facilities and the people, including the Aborigines. The post-penal period from 1842 shows the importance of land sales on the economy and the increase in warehouse and trade facilities. Immigration became an important factor -- 1842 to 1846 saw the phasing out of the convict heritage, while the subsequent period to 1854 reveals the rising hopes of the young city'.. First edition..
