London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1953. 361 pp, 12mo (7 1/8" H). "Here will be found famous passages of martial literature, but in the main this book goes to diaries, dispatches, recollections and reflections little known or out of print. It is both an anthology for the general reader to dip into and a companion to historical studies. Gay and grumbling, high-flown and understated, dramatic and humdrum, comic and tragic, these pieces illustrate the British temper in war - a business unpremeditated and often bungled at the beginning, conducted prodigally and doggedly but without neurosis, and then finished and done with. They start with the brilliant switch from the Meuse to the Danube which confounded the Europe of 1704 and end with Korea where again the world has seen the characteristic stubborness without display of ruthlessness or heroics - ." Pages are lightly browned, edges of text block are browned - small light stain on fore-edge, light browning to edges of boards and on spine, light edgewear - mainly at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has heavy browning on spine and some edges, repaired tear on hinges with tape on inside, tear at bottom of front flap - archivally taped. Small chips at top of spine, light edgewear. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Fair.
