British Columbia: From the Earliest Times to the Present, Scholefield, Ethelbert Olaf Stuart. Published by The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co. Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montreal, Chicago, 1914. 4to up to 12" tall. Volume I, 688pp., Volume 2, 727pp., Volume 3, 1161pp., Volume 4, 1208pp. Illustrated throughout with hundreds of plates, maps, photographs, etchings, and historical documents. Volumes 1 and 2 include indexes and appendices; Volumes 2 and 3 are arranged alphabetically and contain the biographies and portraits of notable British Columbians. Volume 1 bound in half black leather over green pebbled cloth boards; Volume 2,3, 4 are uniformly bound in brown leather over green. Banded spines with gilt titles, gilt top edge, decorative green endpapers, inner linen hinges.
Lightly weakened hinges Volume 1 and 2: first and last signatures of Vol 1 are loosened; one page is detached and one plate is partially detached in Vol 2. Contents are otherwise fine without marks, tears, folds and pages remain white. Rubbing and fraying to boards edges and spine with some loss of suede; two corners with interior boards showing through; a few spot marks to boards. Overall, in very good condition.
E.O.S. Scholefield (1875-1919), was Provincial Librarian and Archivist of British Columbia. His work represents an early, and important political and economic history of the province.
