About This Item

Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, revised edition, 1998. Cloth, gilt cover title, 4to, 28 cm,. 368 pp, ills (some colour). From the blurb: "When British Prints was first published in 1987 it immediately filled an important gap within a field of collecting which had hitherto lacked a reliable and extensive work of reference. This revised edition carries on the tradition of the original British Prints being a comprehensive dictionary of British printmakers working between 1650 and 1950. Wide-ranging in scope, it covers, eighteenth Century mezzotint portraits, nineteenth Century sporting aquatints and topographical views and 'original' etchings and lithographs in the twentieth Century. It provides a convenient and accessible means of identifying a printmaker, looking up the concise biographical summary and ascertaining the printmaker's range of work and relative stature, as well as obtaining some idea of the likely value of the works. Arranged alphabetically rather than by period, the book contains over 500 black and white illustrations with sixty in colour, and reproduces many classic works of the period as well as some great rarities. The original 1987 introduction has been retained and a new, updated version has been especially written by Ian Mackenzie for this revised edition. Together these give a broad definition of the prints covered in the book and provide an aid to their identification, a guide to the problems of the condition of individual impressions, a summary of the different collecting fields and an up-to-date assessment of the current prints market. Upper corners bumped, otherwise Near Fine in slightly chipped dustwrapper.
