David James Mathew was born in1902 and following naval service in World War I he studied history at Oxford and gained his degree in 1923. He then studied for ordination and spent much of his life in the service of the church in London and in Africa, later as bishop in ordinary to the British Armed Forces. He wrote numerous works on history. Those who read this book will be brought near to the inmost spirit of maritime Britain. A really nice copy of the first edition in this collectable series but without dust-wrapper.
