About This Item

[Pennsylvania:] British Emigrant Society, [1819]. Broadsheet with engraved map of Brittania,  6½ x 8 inches. Old folds; some spotting; some separation or closed splits along fold (no loss).

An unusual promotional piece for recent emigrants to America advertising an agricultural mecca. The town of Britania was to be located in a large tract of land in Susquehanna County in Pennsylvania. The text touts the good land and climate of the area and the relative ease of access to Philadelphia and New York City. The text states that November 15, 1819 is the designated deadline date for the completion of the purchase of the land so that the settlement could go forward.

The text has been attributed; it is derived from a book (Sabin 36198) written in Philadelphia in 1819 by Charles Britten Johnson (?1788-1836) who was an educated Welsh émigré from Clun and a surgeon.

The engraved map on the broadsheet is generous and detailed. It was one of H.S. Tanner's early accomplishments. The object is formatted so it can be folded and used as a mailer. The map, in this copy, is printed upside down in relation to the text possibly denoting an early issue point.

OCLC: APS, Yale, NY Historical, LCP, Office of Commonwealth.

Not in Howes or Sabin; see Ristow for Tanner citations.
