About This Item

New York, NY: William H. Wise. Fine. 1929. Reprint. Broadside. Some leaves have slight binding perforations at the left edge.; Twelve of Elbert Hubbard's mottos, or "epigrams," as he would sometimes call them. Each motto printed in an Arts and Crafts style: text within a graphic frame with decorative borders, some styled after similar borders by William Morris' Kelmscott Press. Most have decorative capitals, are printed in black and red text, and the Roycroft cross-and-orb device is below the text. The mottos are thus: 1. I wish to be simple, honest, frank - natural, clean in mind and body, unaffected - ready to say "I do not know," if so it be - to meet all men on an absolute equality - to face any obstacle and meet any difficulty unabashed and unafraid - to cultivate the hospitable mind and the receptive heart. 2. The Mintage Of Wisdom Is To Know That Rest Is Rust And That Real Life Is In Love, Laughter And Work. 3. If You Want Work Well Done, Select A Busy Man, The Other Has No Time. 4. Get Your Happiness Out Of Your Work Or You Will Never Know What Happiness Is. 5. Initiative Is Doing The Right Thing Without Being Told. 6. An Ounce Of Loyalty Is Worth A Pound Of Cleverness. 7. God Will Not Look You Over For Medals, Degrees Or Diplomas, But For Scars. 8. The greatest mistake in life is to continually fearing you will make one. 9. Do Unto Others As Though You Were The Others. 10. Folks Who Never Do Any More Than They Get Paid For, Never Get Paid For Any More Than They Do! 11. Never Explain, Your Friends Do Not Need It And Your Enemies Will Not Believe You Anyway. 12. Blessed Is That Man Who Has Found His Work. Printed on 7 3/4" x 10 3/8" lightly-textured, heavy, grey-brown paper that shows considerable fiber content, these being leaves from a William H. Wise 1927 reprint edition of the posthumous "The Note Book of Elbert Hubbard," originally published in 1919 by The Roycrofters. Removed from a copy of the book in a disbound state and the leaves trimmed to symmetrical width. Three example images of mottos are attached to this listing. Ready to mat and frame for your Arts and Crafts themed interior, all leaves are in clean, Near Fine condition.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 12 pages .
