David Broderick came west for the Gold Rush and establishd himself as an anti-slavery politician in early San Francisco. He was elected U.S. Senator from California in 1856. William Gwin was a pro-slavery U.S. Senator from California and often clashed with Broderick. This book also covers in detail the last duel in San Francisco, between Broderick and firebrand Justice David Terry, which cost Broderick his life. Author O'Meara himself was a well-known San Francisco character, having played a major part on the Vigilence Committee of 1856. Howes O83; Cowan II 463.
