About This Item

This is a rare, first edition copy of "THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV" by Fyodor Dostoevsky. 1912 1st American edition, 1st printing; The Macmillan Company; New York. Constance Garnett translation. Gilt top page edges.

Condition:
There is a light stain at the lower-inner corners of the covers by the spine, and some light staining to the spine; sharp corners; tiny cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Bright gilt top page edges. Tight binding with no loose pages. The text pages are in excellent condition - clean and white with no issues found. Crack at the front hinge before the title page (despite the crack, the front cover is firmly attached and not shaky). There is a less severe crack at the rear hinge after the final text page (as with the front cover, despite the crack at the rear the back cover is firmly attached and not shaky). Both cracks have a thin stain at the inner page edges. Bookplate affixed to the front pastedown.

Synopsis

The Brothers Karamazov is the final novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Dostoyevsky spent nearly two years writing The Brothers Karamazov, which was published as a serial in The Russian Messenger and completed in November 1880. Dostoyevsky intended it to be the first part in an epic story titled The Life of a Great Sinner, but he died less than four months after its publication.

Reviews

On Nov 26 2010, Arslectoris said:
Not for the faint of heart, The Brothers Karamazov is a massive book in volume, content and vocabulary- but it will most certainly reward the reader who puts forth the effort to comprehend this book, and only improves upon subsequent readings. It sweeps you up in a whirlwind of emotionally charged events that can, at times, be overwhelming as it both dregs the depths of human evil and soars to the heights of human charity. Blinding in its brilliance and bewildering in its scope, despite its 900+ pages this book is truly worth a second reading, as the first reading is necessary to understand the complex storyline and it is really upon the second go that you can begin to unravel the philosophical threads of which this tangled tale is made. As a philosophical novel it is one of the most famous- "The Grand Inquisitor" is one of the most well-known individual chapters in all of literature. It will well re-pay all thought bestowed upon its explorations of life, death, and the existence of God triple-fold, giving back far more thoughts than you put into it. To sum up, my recommendation is: by all means, read this book, and by all means, read it twice!
