London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co., 1903. 368 pages. Red cloth boards with black detailing on the cover and gold detailing on the spine. Scuffing and wear throughout boards, as well as discoloration. Wear to extremities. Toning/darkening to spine. Tight binding. Light toning to pages. Frontispiece photograph of Rodenbach. Stamp reading "hae" in lowercase letters, about half an inch big, appears on the half-title page and the verso of the title page. Includes three black and white illustrations. This is the archetypal Symbolist novel, and the writing is truly breathtaking. The first French edition was also the first fiction novel illustrated with photographs.. First English Edition.
