About This Item
1953. Mass media paperback. VINTAGE PAPERBACKS Good . 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. Pages loosing. Cover fading. Paper aging. Permabook no. WP234. Original price 35 cents. 1st printing. About the book: Agood fast-paced yarn of the phase of the War between the States that moved back and forth across the valley of the Tennessee, from 1862 to the relief of Nashville and the unionists of eastern Tennessee. Lancaster, as in The Scarlet Patch, tells the old story from a new angle- this time through the adventures and misadventures of Whipple Sheldon, secret agent in the heart of the South, who changes from a cocky young blade to a seasoned veteran, in the process of adversity and suffering. He is one of the crew that almost get away with capturing a rebel train; he is imprisoned in a foul cellar near Chattanooga; he poses as a Canadian munitions agent, sympathetic to the South; he even serves with the rebel army, until he can slip over the lines near Vicksburg, there to join the forces of Grant and Sherman. Romance and adventure- and a lively picture of the operation of private agents -- ""the right sort of people"" -- through bitter years. Lancaster spins a good yarn -- and yet has never reached the higher sales brackets. (Kirkus)
