Buncombe County was formed in 1791 and included what are now the following western North Carolina Counties: Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Swain, Transylvania and also parts of Yancey, MsDowell, and Polk. This deed index includes the date of instrument, grantor, date proven (except when proved in court), Book#, Page #, and description or the number of acres and water courses when given. The State Grant number is given. The Grantees are also indexed, except for the state grants. As there was no 1790 census for the land mentioned in the oldest deeds lies in the state of Tennessee. This book contains the names of more than 40,000 individuals. .
