About This Item

[Japan ca. 1880]. A hand-colored albumen photograph, 25.5 x 20 cm., title caption & light #14 in lower right corner, board mounted, another photo on the verso [back side], solid example. * * RARE ORIGINAL ITEM * * . *** **** *** . . A STUNNING & EARLY COLOR VIEW OF THE NAGASAKI BUND . . * WHO WAS THE PHOTOGRAPHER, UENO HIKOMA [1838-1904] was a Nagasaki photographer. . * Ueno Hikoma was a pioneer Japanese photographer, born in Nagasaki. He is noted for his fine portraits, often of important Japanese and foreign figures, and for his excellent landscapes, particularly of Nagasaki and its surroundings. Ueno was a major figure in nineteenth-century Japanese photography as a commercially and artistically successful photographer and as an instructor. . *** THE IMAGES: . BUND NAGASAKI NO.14: The Nagasaki image is very clear, with pastel hand-tinted coloring, no bright reds, subdued, with a view from the water of the Bund. This also shows large two-storied buildings, two have very tall flag poles, one may be the American flag limply hanging. . Primitive electric poles with wires can be seen along the Bund. Two small boat launching stanchions are fixed to the stone wall with small boats suspended, nearby is a stone stairway to the water, with small boats moored. . On the hill in the background near the Bund buildings is a grand and large building. A very calm, and historical view. . * IMAGE TWO: On the verso [back side] is an another photograph of Ueno's work. This shows the inside of a house or Ryokan [Japanese Inn], with three Kimono-clad Japanese women seated on a Tatami mat floor on Zabuton [pillows]. A man smokes a cigarette nearby resting his arm on a wooden Hibachi [brazier], he also sits on a Zabuton. The room is in the traditional Japanese style, with a single light bulb lamp suspended from the ceiling. Two Kakejiku scrolls adorn the Tokunoma [art alcove] with other art objects displayed. This photograph is hand-colored with a bit of fading, also a bit of the usual use of bright red. An excellent example. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCES: .
