About This Item
Ariel Books / British Broadcasting Corporation, London, 1985. First Edition. Softcover. Good Condition. Illustrator: Photographic. foreword by Eileen Atkins and select reading list. Between pages 64 and 81 there are black-and-white photographs. Colour photographic paperback binding with yellow and white coloured titles to the front panel and black coloured titles to the back strip. Between April 1914 until just before the second world war there was a grass roots expression of democracy, it became known as the Burston School Strike, where Tom and Kitty Higdon (teachers) were bound and determined to improve the conditions of their students  by and large children of farm labourers. They quickly came into conflict with the Reverend Charles Tucker Eland, Rector of the Parish, chairman of the Board of school Managers, and, "... self-appointed upholder of economic and social status quo." -- from the rear panel blurb. Taken from the villages' own memories, eyewitness stories and newspaper reports this is the bizarre, extreme, and, unfortunately violent tale. Rubbing of the book edges and panels with sunning and foxing spots also present. Uniform Browning of the text block edges and pages along with foxing. Foxing to the endpapers. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [6], 118, [2] pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: Photographic. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams.
