London, 1890s. Half Morocco. Pebbled cloth on boards. . Very Good. Catalogue of C. & W. May Costumiers, Garrick Street. Circa 1890s. A few of the mounted illustrations are dated, '93, '96, or '97, and eight are signed by Crafter Five of the design sheets have pinned swatches, and a few have pencil notes about the costume details. Folio, 31.5 by 25.5 cm. 43 watercolored designs of theater costume by R. Crafter, about whom we know nothing beyond his name. Designs are of a wide variety, from then day dress to interpretations of 17th and 18th Century fashion. The interpretations are colorful and playful generally. The people in the illustrations are also sometimes endowed with expression. Condition: heavy rubbing of the leather on spine and corners. Scattered soiling within, but watercolors remain vibrant.
