About This Item
[Near Brighton, New York, ca. 1870s]. 3¼ x 6¾ inches. Card stock mount; caption in negative: "St. Regis Lake-Paul Smith's." Series title on recto. Later collection stamp on verso. Small chip to corner on verso; very good.
Paul Smith's Hotel was founded in 1859 by Apollos Austin "Paul" Smith (1825-1912) as the Saint Regis House, one of the first wilderness resorts in the Adirondacks. The image shows a large boat house on Lower St. Regis Lake with the hotel-without its later additions-in the background. Before being destroyed by fire in 1930, the hotel hosted such guests as P.T. Barnum, J.P. Morgan, and three U.S. presidents: Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, and Calvin Coolidge.
