[Middletown, Connecticut?, circa 1890s]. Photograph on gilt-edged card mount, 4¼ x 5¼ inches. A very good image.
Portrait of Bishop John Williams (1817-99) of Connecticut wearing an academic gown, seated at a desk in his library surrounded by his books.
Williams was educated at Harvard and Trinity colleges, later becoming Trinity's fourth president and afterwards dean and professor of theology at Berkeley Divinity School in Middletown, Connecticut. He wrote extensively and was the author or editor of several books. In 1887, Williams became the eleventh Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Around the time of this portrait, Williams was acknowledged as the senior bishop in the Anglican communion. (See DAB.)
