New York: Random House, 1960. 219 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "Noel Hutson, junketing around the Mediterranean in petty smuggling operations, liked to think of himself as a gallant adventurer. But in the middle of a foul-smelling North African desert kasbah, with a truckload of contraband guns for some grim-faced Arabs, he began to think less and less like a swashbuckling hero. When he was forced to reload his truck with a suspicious cargo for delivery back to his boss in Tangier, it was enough to make any high-strung young man lose control, and then send a frantic SOS letter to his family. Noel and his truck disappeared, but the letter produced his older brother Darrell, on a reluctant mission to pull Noel's chestnuts out of the fire - an exciting suspense novel about an American of courage and intelligence who succeeded in taking everything he wanted away from the restless society of smuggling, murder, and North African politics." Bequest bookplate of the actor Raymond Massey to his alma mater on front free endpaper, light edge wear to the boards, wrinkling from a small bump and very tiny tear at top of the spine, a very slight lean to the spine, very light browning to the fore-edge of the text block. Dust jacket, with the original $2.95 price, has light edge wear, minor rubbing, some darkening to the flap-folds, light fading to the spine colour, light wrinkling at the top of the spine, red colour rub line at top of rear panel - now protected in a removable mylar sleeve.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Milton Glaser, jacket design..

New York: Random House, [1960]. First edition. Corners and spine ends a little bruised, a nearly fine copy in a very good dust jacket with mild wear to spine ends and corner tips, closed tear to upper rear flap fold, mild fade to orange background ink of spine panel, upper front panel shows indent from where paperclips once held something, indents visible on front panel from a note having been written over top. (31242). Octavo, boards. Winner of Mystery Writers Edgar Award for best first novel 1960. "In the Ambler tradition of plunging an innocent bystander into the thick of international finagling, it involves an American engineer in the passage of arms to Algerian rebels. Ingenious in action, vivid in local color, it brings off the rare trick of presenting a hero who is admirably resourceful physically and mentally without any hint of the irritating and incredible superman." - Anthony Boucher, NY Times, April 10, 1960.
